Imagine Schools wins appeal over class size penalty; $17K fine lifted

“INDIAN RIVER — Imagine Schools at South Vero has won its appeal over Class Size Amendment requirements and won’t be penalized, the Florida Board of Education decided.

The state listed Imagine Schools as not in compliance with state class size requirements. School officials appealed, claiming there had been a formula error and the school thought it was in compliance, according to a press release by the school.

The board withdrew the school’s $17,071 penalty for being out of compliance.

Imagine Schools at South Vero is a prekindergarten-through seventh-grade charter school. The school’s student counts showed the school’s average class size for prekindergarten through third grade was 17.85 students, below the state-mandated cap of 18 students. But Florida Department of Education reports released last month showed the school was 5.27 percent — or 29 students — over the cap for that grade level.

Each Treasure Coast district was found in compliance with Class Size.

Charter schools and districts found not in compliance with Class Size lose some of their state allocation money. Up to 5 percent of that state money then is reallocated to schools that meet requirements.”
