ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT is centered on individualized student learning. Therefore, we use same student learning gains to assess how much each student learns during the school year. In 2010-11, nearly two-thirds of Imagine students demonstrated average reading and math learning gains of one year or more.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT is modeled and integrated into every aspect of the school day. Helping students become better sons and daughters, citizens, leaders, and friends is essential for our communities and nation to prosper. We must raise students to be good as well as smart.

Art Contest
Imagine Schools is pleased to display the artwork of winners and finalists in the 1st Annual Imagine Schools National Art Contest. Hundreds of students competed in the “Imagine the Possibilities” Contest. The winning artwork by Imagine Schools at Lakewood Ranch 2nd Grader Raleigh Waldin will be featured on the front cover of the Imagine Schools 2011 Annual Report. Character Contest
Reflection is a critical part of fostering students’ deep understanding of what it means to display good character. This year, Imagine Schools hosted its 6th Annual Character Essay Contest to encourage just that. Students chose a maxim or quotation that they found particularly meaningful and reflected in an essay on how that maxim applied to their lives and/or the world around them.
This year, we received hundreds of essays from 50 Imagine schools across the country! It was wonderful to gain insight into how some of these students were connecting truths about character to situations in their own lives, especially through their most difficult experiences. On July 15, 2011, hundreds of volunteers, Members of Congress and their families, Education Sec. Arne Duncan, and First Lady Michelle Obama joined Imagine Southeast leaders, parents, and students in building the 2000th KaBOOM! playground.
During her remarks, Mrs. Obama said, “I want to thank this community, the community members who have allowed us to come here, who have developed and built and support this beautiful school; to all the kids who will be taking advantage; to all the people across the street. You all make sure you help take care of this playground. You make sure that kids get over here and play. We want you all moving. Under the leadership of Founding Principal Stacey Scott and the Board of Trustees, Imagine Southeast Public Charter School currently educates approximately 500 children in grades Pre K-5. The school opened its doors in 2008 with 223 students, the largest opening charter school enroll-ment in recent Washington, D.C. in history. It is one of the city’s fastest growing charter schools.
Imagine Southeast’s mission is to prepare students to love learning, have outstanding character, and take responsibility for themselves and others through a culturally responsive, single-sex educational environment. Imagine Southeast is D.C.’s only dual academy single gender school, which teaches both boys and girls in single gender classes starting in the first grade and allows teachers to tailor their classes to the different learning styles of boys and girls. Imagine Southeast uses Core Knowledge, a content-rich humanities curriculum, as the foundation of its curriculum.
In February 2011, Imagine Southeast moved from a temporary school facility to the newly renovated Old Congress Heights Building, which had been abandoned for decades. The renovated school building provides a safe, inviting environment where students can learn and grow, both in academics and character. Not only will Imagine Schools’ investment benefit students and families seeking better educational choices, but the enhanced space is a resource for the community symbolizing the revitalization of Ward 8.
Imagine Southeast is honored to be the location for the 2,000th KaBOOM! Playground build, which will include an innovative Imagination Playground in a Cart and a community garden. The playground addition to the campus enhances the connection with the community and demonstrates the commitment of many partners to educate children in this underserved community.
