Fifth grade students at Imagine West Melbourne in Florida made a web to show the manufacturing process of building a car. The activity was courtesy of a daylong financial and economic literacy course offered by volunteers from a local credit union.

Students at Imagine West Melbourne in Florida recently had the opportunity to be educated in financial literacy and money management by local Community Credit Union volunteers, through their partnership with Junior Achievement of the Space Coast.

Fourteen volunteers from Community Credit Union spent the day working with students as part of a full day of Junior Achievement (JA). From these volunteers, students learned the basic concepts of business, entrepreneurship, economics and how financial education is relevant to the real world.

“Junior Achievement was such an awesome experience for our third graders,” exclaimed Mrs. Joan Dean, third grade English language arts and science teacher. “The students learned real life experiences; how to start a business and how to manage money. How nice is it that volunteers from the community are willing to come into classrooms and work with students!”

Every grade level has a different curriculum that builds upon previous concepts, as evidenced by skills students demonstrate. For example, third grade student Alyssa Marshall said, “JA showed me how to deposit and withdraw money. We played a game where we earned money or had to spend money.”

Braelyn Jackson, also a third grader, learned about different forms of media, stating, “I learned the different ways to get information. Sometimes the news on TV is a good way to get information; other times I may want to listen to the radio.”

We are grateful for community partners such as Community Credit Union volunteers who help our students make real world connections with what they are learning in the classroom.
