A recent toy drive by K-8 students at Imagine Chancellor brought 700 toys to students at sister school Imagine North Lauderdale. Students were delighted to receive gifts for the holidays, with many telling Santa this was the first time they had received toys during the holidays.

Elementary and middle school students from Imagine Chancellor in Boynton Beach, FL found themselves serving as Santa’s elves this holiday season. More than 1,000 students collected more than 700 toys for students at Imagine North Lauderdale, a sister school in North Lauderdale serving more than 650 K-6 students. The toy drive is a result of Imagine Chancellor’s emphasis on community service and encouraging students to develop strong leadership and citizenship traits.

Imagine North Lauderdale serves K-5 students with a 96.8% Free and Reduced Lunch population. More than nine languages are represented at the campus. For many of the students, the event and toys received are their primary holiday celebration.

Middle school students and staff members from Imagine Chancellor delivered the toys in time for the North Lauderdale students to enjoy a shopping spree for holiday gifts. Santa was also in attendance, taking photos with students and passing out gifts. Many of the students told Santa this was the first time they had received a toy during the holidays.

Susan Onori, principal of Imagine Chancellor, described the event as heartwarming and magical, one that had an impact on both the students giving and receiving. “Imagine Chancellor students have been studying the concept of justice; giving to each individual what he or she uniquely needs,” explains Onori. “They made the connection between what they will be receiving during the holidays as opposed to students at their sister school. Our students decided to collect toys in an effort to bring both justice and a happier holiday to students like them. This will definitely become an annual tradition for our two schools.”

Imagine Schools is a national non-profit network of pre-K-12 charter schools preparing students for lives of leadership, accomplishment and exemplary character.
